Atlantis, The Palm Ramps Up Its Conservation Efforts By Hosting A Series Of Interactive Experiences For Shark Week

The region’s first AZA-accredited resort is joining forces with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and Dubai Municipality for a week of fun and informative activities to increase awareness of sharks

In a bid to raise awareness about sharks both locally and internationally, while educating people about how to protect them, from 17th July to 23rd July, Atlantis, The Palm will be collaborating with environmental partners to present a week of shark-themed activities both onsite and online.

Engaging onsite activations have been designed to entertain and enthral all ages, including limited-edition behind-the-scene shark tours, once-in-a-lifetime shark diving experiences and shark scavenger hunts – all conducted within the government health and safety guidelines. Throughout the week Atlantis, The Palm will reiterate the importance of caring for animals, showcasing how their onsite team of specialists manage this, while re-enforcing the significance of the resort being the first AZA-accredited facility in the Middle East.

Edu-tainment during Shark Week will also be streamed online with live shark feeding sessions narrated by the marine park’s curators, along with workshops on sharks and rays, and episodes covering the resort’s shark breeding and release programmes. Wildlife fanatics are advised to look out for a special feature from local artist and marine enthusiast Emma Skinner, who will be teaching an online Shark-Art workshop.

Atlantis, The Palm is proud to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the global standard for animal care, as the first destination in the Middle East to receive this internationally recognised, gold standard accreditation. Home to more than 65,000 marine animals cared for by a dedicated team of animal care professionals and an onsite veterinary team, the resort is committed to maintaining and surpassing the highest standards of animal care, conservation and education.

There will also be some fantastic prizes up for grab with a competition inviting people to submit videos on how they care for animals, whether at home or in the wild, with prizes including a family stay at Atlantis, The Palm , Shark Diving Experiences and much more.

Says Kelly Timmins, Director, Conservation, Education and CSR at Atlantis, The Palm: “We are excited to host Shark Week along with our valued partners. We are committed to working together towards a common goal, to advance all efforts to protect sharks in the UAE. At Atlantis Dubai we are dedicated to providing the highest standards of animal welfare for all marine life. We believe in the power of education, and by providing meaningful and memorable experiences, we are encouraging everyone to join us in our drive to protect the environment.”

During Shark Week the specialist team at Atlantis will be part of a workshop hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, teaching local fishermen about legislation, protected species, and safe handling of sharks and rays. In addition, our team will join other experts for a Shark Webinar, in coordination with the Federal Youth Council, to discuss critical subjects involved in protecting these species.
