The opening of The Melrose Gallery at One&Only Cape Town

A Celebration of Art, African Identity & Time Beyond The Confines of Chronology with artist Dr Esther Mahlangu

One&Only Cape Town, an exclusive resort situated in the vibrant V&A Waterfront, prides itself on offering guests and visitors the opportunity to experience the best that Cape Town and South Africa has to offer. Proudly South African, the resort pays attention to ensuring localised experiences, and a celebration of the country’s diverse cultures and heritage.

The resort’s gallery, situated on the 1st floor, is soon to become second home to The Melrose Gallery – who are expanding their successful gallery space in Melrose Arch Johannesburg. In this way, Cape Town and its visitors can also benefit from their exhibits and programmes.

The One&Only Cape Town is proud to announce this association with The Melrose Gallery, which will set in motion new possibilities for showcasing and celebrating the work and ideas of Pan African Contemporary artists.

This exciting partnership will provide a valuable platform to promote these artists via four captivating curated exhibitions per annum, in a space that hosts an array of international visitors and guests who can now enjoy and also support African art, culture and creativity.

As an opening celebration, One&Only Cape Town and The Melrose Gallery will be unveiling six paintings created for this specific occasion by internationally acclaimed artist Dr Esther Mahlangu. Embraced as a national treasure, she has captivated the interest and imagination of the world with her gift, and her beautiful understanding of how art is central to our cultural identity as human beings. Even at the age of eighty three, the iconic artist still continues producing work and creative interpretations of the sacred geometry and practices of Ndebele and African culture.

She will also declare The Melrose Gallery at the One&Only Cape Town open, by launching ‘TIMELESS’, a captivating group exhibition that encapsulates the diversity, artistic talent and legacy of both established and emerging Pan-African artists. “TIMELESS” is part of the official VIP programme for the International Cape Town Art Fair 2019, and Art Week Cape Town. The exhibition is a bold and intimate conversation that features works by visionary artists including Esther Mahlangu, Willie Bester, Paul Blomkamp, Christiaan Diedericks, Aza Mansongi, Clint Strydom, Ndabuko Ntuli, Ronald Muchatuta, and Restone Maambo. It is a creative conversation that unfolds through art, time and consciousness.

The One&Only Cape Town has a long history of supporting the arts, and has acquired and continues to grow its extensive art collection. This new association with The Melrose Gallery is just another step in their goal to provide an authentic, exclusive and memorable experience for visitors and guests.

We invite you to explore the artworks in the new space at your leisure.
